Businesses affected by Riccarton bus pollution

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding BUSINESSES IN central Riccarton putting up with youth crime as a result of the Division St bus lounge could face another battle. Robinsons of Riccarton Pharmacy owner Mark Robinson said the pollution from continual buses going past are affecting businesses on Riccarton Rd. The issues have come as the city council’s Riccarton Rd bus lounge and bus priority project aims to give buses priority over other traffic on the road. Mr Robinson said he would like to see Blenheim Rd used as Riccarton’s main bus route in combination with more electric buses. But Environment Canterbury says there is no alternative route that it would propose for the buses. ECan’s public transport senior manager Stewart Gibbon said many of its bus patrons are from different areas in the city and want to go to the area because of its commercial attractions, such as Westfield Riccarton. About 3000 people board buses in Riccarton and more than 800 buses pass the mall daily. •Turn to page 5

Inside

FROM THE REPORTER’S DESK IT’S BEEN a tough time for Riccarton businesses near the bus lounge. Some have already closed their doors, not due to trading problems, but because of continual harassment from a small number of young people. Now they are facing another challenge, more big noisy buses rattling past their businesses (page 1). Pharmacy owner Mark Robinson is at the point where he wishes he could move on, but he has a long-term lease. Meanwhile, vandals are really going to the next level out at Lake Roto Kohatu reserve (page 5). Finally, the UC Championship is starting this week – the school rugby competition (page 9). Good luck to all the teams who have been training hard, we will be watching your progress. –Georgia O’Connor-Harding

Green light for funeral home Residents vow to continue fight By Georgia O’Connor-Harding RESIDENTS HAVE vowed to continue protesting weekly until they win the battle to stop a new funeral facility setting up in Fendalton. The first protest against a funeral satellite office to be set up on Rochdale St was held on Saturday. The protest was attended by Mayor Lianne Dalziel, MP for Ilam Gerry Brownlee and city councillor Raf Manji. It comes after an application by Bell, Lamb and Trotter Funeral Directors to open a “funeral satellite office” at 1 Rochdale St was approved by independent commissioner Philip Milne last week. The home-based funeral facility drew opposition from

Twenty-six services are to be held at the house each year with a maximum of two per week. The facility would operate between 9am and 8pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am to 7pm at weekends. Funeral services would be limited from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. In the decision, commissioner Milne said: “Death will visit most if not every home at some point. Death will be more prevalent in residential areas than commercial or industrial areas.” He said to allow small homebased intimate funeral services within a residential zone can be seen as providing for the well-being of people and the community. Managing director Andrew Bell said the company has been trying to establish the facility on the street for more than a year, and it is likely be established in a month. However, Dr Nicholls said residents on the street will continue to fight the funeral facility. “I understand that our only avenue is probably a judicial review . . . I don’t think there is any other avenue in which it can

be overturned,” he said. Ms Dalziel said the purpose of the city council’s District Plan was to reduce the amount of compliance on businesses. “And this is the result of it, the businesses win. “That can’t have been what anyone intended and it has got to be fixed,” she said. Resident Karen Harrison said she will continue protesting until the facility goes away. To the crowd, she said: “My challenge to you is to come back here at 1pm (next Saturday) and bring one more person.” HAVE YOUR SAY: Are you concerned a funeral facility has been given the green-light to be set up on a residential street? Flooding could have been a lot worse By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer THE MOTHER of all storms was predicted to hit the country during Easter. What actually occurred was a bit of a fizzer. Here in Christchurch there were a few people who would argue that what they experienced was hardly a fizzer but thankfully these incidents were relatively rare. Mainly on Good Friday our troops responded to six flooding events, one power line down and a couple of instances where rain water and electrical systems were found to be incompatible. What the bad weather and the crisp mornings since did result in was the first use of the year of heating devices. This in turn caused a couple of callouts, a log fire smoking the house out in Quinns Rd, an oil fired home heating system refusing to close down and a bathroom heater on fire in Sumner. Those with fireplaces should have had the flu or chimney swept by now. If not please do it, might save

red faces or worse in the near future. Those who are using heat pumps perhaps for the first time need to know 21 deg C is accepted as the highest comfortable setting. Anything above that you’ll probably get an expensive shock when the power bill arrives. Hornby Hub got evacuated a couple of times this week, the first from a reported car fire in the rooftop car park that turned out to be steam and then an oven overheating in the supermarket on Easter Monday. A real nuisance to management, retailers and the public.

Bus pollution adds to Riccarton business woes •From page 1 “Buses would only make up a small percentage of the current traffic volume, and I don’t have a concern about the number of buses currently using this route,” Mr Gibbon said. Mr Robinson said the buses are high pollutants, noisy and he is concerned workers in the area are exposed regularly to carbon monoxide from the buses. The buses add to a barrage of issues already in the area. Riccarton Rd business The Baby Factory moved out last Friday and Art of Sewing will move out this week after deciding not to

renew their leases due to ongoing youth crime. Since opening in 2015, the Riccarton bus lounge has been a hot-

spot for trouble-causing youth, affecting surrounding businesses. A new bylaw targeting loitering has been suggested by Constable

Aaron Thorn to address youth crime on Division St. “Now that the businesses are closing, I am not sure how we are going to survive . . . if I had the chance I would definitely move out but we are stuck in a longterm lease,” Mr Robinson said. Property owner Arthur McKee said the city council needs to balance its focus on bikes and buses

against the ability of businesses operating successfully. But one business owner, who did not wish to be named, told Western News the buses had not affected his business and were probably good for bringing people to the area. All work on the bus priority project is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. Costs that are landing back on ratepayers. That is causing concern for the board, which is currently waiting for a report back from city council staff detailing how much it costs to

cleanup after the vandalism. However, Mr Cartwright fears it will be an “incomprehensible” sum. “It’s thousands and it could be tens of thousands spent over a year, almost weekly,” he said. Once the report comes back, Mr Cartwright said the next step would be looking at preventative measures.

That could mean giving Department of Conservation rangers the power to trespass or looking at access changes to the park. “There’s no record of anyone being trespassed out there by city council enforcement,” he said. The board is also fed up with the time and effort staff have to spend clearing up the mess. The city council could not respond in time to questions from Nor’West News regarding the vandalism, as staff were on leave.

Richard Rendle Our People Retired – but no time for idle hands Bishopdale MeNZ Shed co-ordinator Richard Rendle retired from teaching when he was 50 but by no means has he been idle since then. He speaks to Julia Evans about what keeps him busy Richard, I hear you’ve got a background in teaching? Yes, I was a teacher for almost 30 years. I taught at Christchurch Boys’ High School for seven of those and at Kaiapoi High School for 21 years. I’m a chemistry teacher. I began in 1969 after finishing my degree – I love chemistry and loved teaching it to the kids. I quit teaching when I was 50, when all the NCEA stuff come in. I’ve been in early retirement since I was 50 but you don’t get as much money, you know. I’ve been involved in writing school textbooks and I asked the editor if there was any chance on some freelance editing and he said yes, I guess so, so that’s why I quit teaching. But I ended up doing computerdrawn artwork for textbooks. What is it about the sciences that you love so much? I think it probably is just how my brain works. I’m fascinated by stuff – but on a very simple level. The sort of stuff you teach

to secondary school kids. I’ve written articles about salt and some of the elements recently. Sounds to me that you haven’t really retired at all. One of the things that I did after the artwork, we started producing exams for schools to use as internal practice ones. In about 1998 when the new prescription came out for year 13 students, they were screaming out for a practice exam and someone said to me could we do it. I got together a team of exschool teachers and there were a few women on maternity leave. That’s been going since 1998 and we now do a year 12, 13 and the chemistry scholarship exam. Tell me about your family? I’ve got a son who’s a lead scientist with the Ferrier Research Institute at Victoria University. A daughter who is in market-

ing at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and the youngest who is a stay-at-home mum but she’s worked in environmental science. My wife has an accounting degree but they didn’t go that way. There must be a love for science in your blood. I don’t know. I didn’t push them. In fact I’ve probably done more with kids since they’ve grown up and left. I got really interested in the science of toys and went in with toys to teach kids the science behind them. What other hobbies do you have to keep you busy? I’m a gardener, I read and I’m a guitarist, I had a rock band for a while – we did about six gigs a year. We did it for the enjoyment and played covers of the great rock songs from the 60s and 70s. So when did you get into the

MeNZ Shed – how did it come about? I’ve always had a workshop and I really enjoy working there. I’ve been doing a lot of maintenance stuff at church. It’s been a dream of mine to have some sort of workshop for the community. I was thinking about young people with flats and houses without space for a workshop. I was down at Mitre 10 in Bishopdale and there was a pamphlet for the MeNZ Shed and I said yip, this is exactly what I want. Have you always had a strong connection with the community or was it just the shed that about? I was on the school committee at Kendal School in the early 80s and I’ve been involved with Canterbury Science teachers – But the MeNZ Shed is different because it’s completely voluntary.

Guys come and go and it’s a fantastic thing for guys who have retired. It’s a win-win situation, because we do a lot of community work. What kind of community work? We’ve built a lot of planter boxes for the council social housing. The council provides the timber and we build them. We do repairs and making stuff for pre-schools, kindergartens and Plunkets. Individuals come in and say can you make this for us and we’ll have a look at it. Or just repairing bits of furniture that are broken and they give us a donation. One of the things we don’t want to do is we don’t want to take work away from tradesmen. Do you find it’s a win for the community but also win for you guys coming together and having a bit of fun? Oh definitely, we’ve got a few, who have worked 40 hours a week for 40-plus years and someone just gives them a box of chocolates and shows them the door. For the first two weeks it’s fantastic but now what do I do? We’ve had people who have come and said they’ve retired and basically they’re depressed and say this is the best thing that could have happened. What are you working on at the moment? We make coffins, which started through a lady who belongs to the coffin club. Her original vision was to make coffins for stillborn babies. So to pay for that, she makes the full-size ones, which are sort of pre-ordered. Recently, we were approached by the Antarctic Centre asking us to make kit-sets for penguin boxes. The idea is that kids at the centre will assemble them and they’ll eventually go out on the peninsula with DOC rangers. We’re also making iPad stands for people with low vision. You’ve got plenty to keep you busy then. Well yes, but if I didn’t, I’d get bored. I’m a practical guy, I don’t sit and philosophise about much.

St Bede’s teens help Filipino youth THUMBS UP: St Bede’s College students Keane Patrick Harrington (left) and Daniel Kofoed (below) got crafty with local children during their trip to the Philippines.

By Julia Evans TOUCHING DOWN in the Philippines capital, Manila, two St Bede’s College students were part of a team that went over to help poor youth. From St Joesph’s Catholic Church, the 13-strong team included doctors, teachers, an engineer, a tradesman, a hairdresser and the church priest, as well as the two St Bede’s teenagers, Keane Patrick Harrington and Daniel Kofoed. Keane, 17, and Daniel, 15, said the trip opened their eyes to how privileged life in New Zealand can be. But the real highlight were the children they spent time with, including boys as young as eightyears-old in prison. “There was a group in a tiny, hot cell that all had chickenpox. That was particularly heart breaking,” Daniel said. After a week in Manila, they ventured to the tiny fishing village of Santa Cruz, Tacloban, which was devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 to build a water treatment plant and shelter.

Ashleigh Monk WHEN THE time comes to pack our bags and head for Mars, Christchurch youths will be well-prepared. The Ara Institute of Canterbury is hosting a series of workshops to teach high school students how to get to Mars, and how to survive when they’re there. And, although it may raise a few eyebrows, living on Mars is not that far off, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA predicts a crew, called Daedalus, will make the ninemonth trip to Mars in the 2030s to establish shelter, food and water sources for future newcomers. So, in New Zealand’s July holidays, Ara will be teaching high school students all the

necessary knowledge on how to be a good Mars resident. At 96 per cent carbon dioxide and only one per cent oxygen, the air on Mars is unbreathable, so the Daedalus crew will use electrolysis to convert carbon

dioxide into oxygen. They will also establish a hospitable shelter to protect humans from the temperature extremes Mars displays, along with hydroponic farming and other methods to grow food.

Hand injury specialists a ‘one-stop-shop’ Damage to your hand, whether it is the result of a workplace accident, a sporting injury, or caused through overuse, is not only painful, but can also severely restrict your daily activities. Whatever the cause, or the injury, the specialists at In Touch Hand Therapy will put it right. Trained as physiotherapists and occupational therapists, they have a particular interest in hand injuries and have undergone extra training to specialise in this area, co-owner Alison Wilding says. She and Karyn Butler, who are both registered hand therapists, have been working together at In Touch since 2010. They have a contract with ACC, which means there is a fee for the first visit, but further visits are covered by ACC. Injuries the therapists treat cover a wide spectrum, from sporting injuries that can occur in contact sports like rugby, basketball and netball – such as sprains, bone fractures and ligament strains, as well as tendonitis, golf and tennis elbow, through to workplace injuries, with patients often referred to them by workplace occupational health, or injuries that happen around the home. “We also make protective and supportive splints to prevent further injuries and accidents to damaged hands,” Alison says.

Treatment for conditions such as trigger finger and trigger thumb, thumb arthritis and carpal tunnel is provided, as well as postoperative treatment following hand or wrist surgery. Acupuncture is also offered, and the clinic’s facilities include a gym area for strengthening and rehabilitation exercises. Hand surgeon Mr Ram Chandru holds sessions at the clinic once a month to assess patients and advise if surgery is required, which he then carries out at Southern Cross hospital. “We’re really a one-stop-shop for anything related to hand injuries,” Alison says. “And patients don’t always need a referral from their GP. They can self-refer.” A year ago, In Touch Hand Therapy moved from Carmen Road into brand-new premises on Main South Road, which have been fitted out specifically for the hand therapy practice. The therapists also run clinics in Rolleston three day a week and Lincoln one day a week. Appointments at these clinics or at their Hornby/Wigram clinic, 212 Main South Road, next to D.A. Lewis Furniture, can be made through their website www.intouchhandtherapy.co.nz, or by phone, 349-3388.

Western schools start championship bid This weekend will see the start of the UC Championship with a number of western schools getting their campaigns under way. Andrew King takes a look at the opening round

SPORTS

Christchurch Boys’ High School CBHS first XV look towards defending their UC Championship title with an opening game against Waimea Combined. Fresh from a training camp in Hamilton at the weekend, and having beaten Southland Boys’ High School 30-17 last week, the team is looking good. CBHS rugby co-ordinator and assistant coach Rob Smith said key players in the CBHS setup will be hooker Adam Reid, halfback Louie Chapman, fullback Ryan Barnes, winger Latham Kelly-Foleni and second-five Alex Harford. Harford was last year’s top scorer for CBHS with one try, 47 conversions and seven penalties. He returns to the side as captain. Last year’s team topped the table in tries scored, with 94, and in conversions, with 58. Smith said the team will be finalised this week before the opening game. Burnside High School Burnside will look to emulate their form from last season which saw them finish eighth, ahead of northern rivals St Bede’s. They will open their account against St Thomas, which finished 11th last year. The team will have a new coach after Murray Henderson departed at the end of last season. A new coach will be appointed during the season, a Burnside rugby spokesman said. Winning eight from 15 will be a tough ask without barnstorming centre Mikaele Ravalawa, who was snapped up by the Canberra Raiders last year. Ravalawa scored 14 tries and kicked three conversions in the 2016 season.

St Thomas of Canterbury College St Thomas finished 11th last season and will look to improve in 2017. Recording four wins from 14, they will hope to move up the table this season. St Thomas have one of the most exciting players in the competition at their disposal. Jordan Riki is touted as one of the country’s best young rugby league players and is now playing in the St Thomas first XV. The year 13 student, who has previously played for CBHS, has a contract with the Brisbane Broncos and won the under-16

domestic player of the year at the New Zealand Rugby League awards in January. St Bede’s College: After finishing outside the top eight in the 2016 season, St Bede’s first XV are looking to redeem themselves. Coach Gerry Davidson said while the team is young, there is plenty of enthusiasm for the upcoming season, which they will open with a game against Lincoln High. “We struggled a bit last year, but we have more depth this year so that will give us a better shot,”

“Last year there were six or seven teams that could beat each other on the day – it was very even, which is good for the competition,” said Davidson.

Travel Visiting the mystical city of Edoras By Mike Yardley IT’S THE type of scenery that screensavers are made for – Mt Sunday, deep in the heart of the Canterbury high country. I always find it fascinating to experience your own turf through the lens of a tourist, gleaning fresh perspectives from the outside world on the place you call home. Better known to movie-fans as the mystical city of Edoras, I recently joined a guided journey to this spectacular cinematic location with Hassle-free Tours. Heading south of Christchurch, in a comfortable six-wheel Toyota Land Cruiser, with elevated seating and panoramic windows, our driver-guide, Hammond, set sail on his illuminating, chatty commentary on the two-hour drive. We entered the Hakatere Conservation Park, flanked by the alpine lakes of Camp and Clearwater and their tight cluster of rustic batches. A quick photostop to soak up the expansive high country vistas served merely as an appetiser for the majesty that lay ahead. On a heavily rutted gravel Hakatere-Potts Rd, bracketed in golden hills of snow tussock, matagouri and toetoe, the most celestial viewpoint appeared at the Mt Potts Cutting, stretching across the broad basin of the Rangitata Valley, buttressed by heroically high mountains and sheer cliffs. Welcome to the Kingdom of Rohan. Much of the land belongs to Mt Potts Station, however, in

the wake of the Lord of the Ringsinspired popularity, DOC created an easement to Mt Sunday aka Edoras. From the public car park, it’s a 15min walk up the southern spur of Mt Sunday. However, one of the many advantages of taking the journey with Hassle-free Tours is that it is the only operator with a concession to drive past the car park, fording the gin-clear streams and up part of the mountain, using the rutted track on the northern spur, which the land cruiser made light work of. From there, it’s a rather effortless stroll to the summit. Sixhundred metres above sea level, this rocky, protruding jewel in the middle of this insanely photogenic valley beckoned us like a

beacon. After we’d mounted the summit, the 360deg alpine panorama is so enthrallingly kaleidoscopic, so jaw-droppingly epic, not even a month of Sundays basking in this perspective would become boring. There’s Erewhon Station of Clydesdales-fame, the serpentine braids of the Rangitata River, the Southern Alps, the expansive valley plain and the silvery, slinking trail of Potts River. The air was so crisp and clear, the mountains seemed magnified with sharp edges and spectacular shingle fans. Only the sound of happilyclicking shutters, competed against the strengthening howls of the wind. The wind-speed reached 72km/h as we took in the summit spectacle and endured an involuntary facial exfoliation. Notorious for wind gusts, Hammond remarked that at the time of shooting, the Rings crew were buffeted by wind gusts as high as 180km/h. The real beauty of the Hassle-free tour is all the insightful behind-the-scenes nuggets. On one particularly windy day, Sir Peter Jackson’s glasses flew off his face, over the cliff, never to be seen again. There’s a movie relic to hunt for. Sir Peter stumbled upon this cinematic location by sheer accident. His location scouts were choppering down to the West

Coast, but were forced to fly east due to bad weather, chancing upon Mt Sunday by a stroke of sheer luck. Many of the riders of Rohan were actually women from pony clubs in mid-Canterbury. Hammond also explained how the construction of the city of Edoras took nine months, showing us photos of the elaborate sets, including Golden Hall, which graced this rocky outcrop. The cast and crew only spent 11 days actually shooting on sight. In spite of the alpine location, miraculously, they didn’t see one drop of rain. Hammond also was equipped with an arsenal of replica weaponry and flags from the movie, which we had great fun posing with for obligatory photos. A variety of movie featurettes were played to our group, including some cracking bloopers. What really shone through was how much the cast genuinely fell in love with Mt Sunday. Driving back to Christchurch, Hammond finally revealed that he was Hammond Peek, the double Oscar-

winner, who sound engineered the Rings trilogy. After 36 years in film and television, since 2006, Hammond has been a driver-guide for Hassle-free Tours. He only works a couple of days a week, so you may want to request a date when he’s behind the wheel. Location is the pixie dust of movie dreams and Mt Sunday is a star specimen in our own backyard.

¼ cup Sugar 1 Tbsp Caster sugar Directions Simmer the orange juice and the jam in a saucepan until the mixture is reduced by half. Stir in the liqueur and cool. Thinly peel two oranges and reserve the peel for the garnish. Peel the remaining oranges, removing as much pith as possible. Place the oranges in a bowl and pour the cooled sauce over them. Chill. To prepare the garnish, cut the reserved peel into very thin strips. Bring one cup of the water to the boil, add the peel and simmer for eight minutes. Drain and rinse in cold water. Bring the remaining ¼ cup of water to the boil. Stir in the sugar, until dissolved. Add the peel and simmer for five minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Toss in the caster sugar. Reserve the syrup and add to the oranges when cool. Top each orange with a little peel. Excellent served with créme fraiche.
